History, Experience & Capabilities ...
Roberta
comes from a background in stained glass though nowadays she is
focussing more on fusing and kiln-forming. She works mainly to
commission, making panels which can be used for windows,
screens, splashbacks, tiles, lighting and signage.
Fused glass
Different coloured glasses are melted together in the kiln to
produce a unique piece. Although the ancient Egyptians used this
technique, it was superseded by blown glass and largely forgotten
until recently. Lately there has been a revival of interest in this
method and a wonderful and ever-increasing range of compatible glass
is available. When transparent colours are used, it has been called
‘painting with light’, and this well describes the effects that can
be achieved by blending and overlaying colours.
Further
effects are possible with the addition of texture through
‘kiln-casting’ – a process which gives a third dimension to the
glass surface, bringing it to life as the light and viewpoint
changes. The depth of texture can be used to control the obscurity
of a panel – useful for bathrooms - and relief lettering can easily
be incorporated.
If a curved
piece is required, the panel can be kiln-formed in a second firing
in which it slumps over a mould. This has potential for bespoke
lighting.
Roberta also
makes smaller items in the kiln- for example bowls and
candleholders. The smaller scale work is a useful way of
experimenting with new designs in an economical way. Roberta loves
the element of chance that the kiln brings to my work. Sometimes the
most exciting effects come from something which first happened by
chance
